What I made
An illustrated mascot and wordmark for Ebisu Labs. The fish has a skull for a head, X eyes, a ribcage body and red fins, with a few bubbles around it. Under it, “ebisu” is set in a heavy rounded lowercase with LABS in caps below.
Design decisions
Ebisu is the Japanese god of fishermen and good luck, and the fish ties the mark to that name. Making it a skeleton gives the mark an edge and makes it memorable. The palette is just bone, red and black. A thick outline around the fish means it can be cut out as a sticker or patch without redrawing anything. The wordmark stays simple so the character can be the loud part.
What it shows
A mascot gives a brand something people can collect, wear and share. I draw a lot of these for stickers and merch, and they start in the same place as any logo design.
